Faculty and Student Perceptions on the Role of a Nursing Instructor


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare those characteristics of nursing instructor perceived to be important by means of A Clinical Instructor Characteristic Ranking Scale between faculty and student.
Fourty-two juniors, fifty-two seniors and twenty-one faculty members from Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, Seoul National University during the period from July 12 to 15, 1982 were chosen as the sample for this study.
The results of this study reviewed in a statistical measures of simple frequency and s Chi-square to obtain the following findings:
1. Juniors and seniors ranked person characteristics the highest, while instructors ranked nurse characteristics, the highest.
2. Person characteristics the highest ranked by juniors and seniors was "being able to promote and encourage students to be open and express their opinions and feelings". Nurse characteristics the highest ranked by instructors was "demonstrating how to function in real nursing situations".
3. There was a significant difference between the different class level and instructors on two items of eighteen characteristics.
The results indicated that junior-senior nursing students regarded the instructors relationships with students as more important than professional competence.
